cookoff front 300x125 Staten Islands First International Chili Cookoff

The first and only New York City chili cookoff sanctioned by International Chili Society will be held Saturday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Historic Richmond Town.

This family event will feature  chili sampling, a hot wing contest, judging, cash prizes, amusements, free kids crafts and live entertainment. Adults will receive a chili tasting kit with paid admission. Cash prizes range from $250 to $750. Awards will honored for first and second place and “people’s choice”. The judges are Staten Island chefs, politicians Staten Island Advance current and former food reporters and the 1997 ICS World Champion Steve Falowski. Steve knows chili…trust me!

According to Ed Wiseman, executive director at Historic Richmond Town, this is an official ICS event and their rules are strict. That means chili consist of only sauce and meat… no beans. This cookoff will have three categories: Red Chili (traditional), Chili Verde (green chili) and Salsa. Contestants (you must be a ICS member) come from all over. As far as Illinois, Connecticut and our own chiliheads from Staten Island. Go Staten Island! Participating at tomorrows event is Staten Island’s own Anthony (Ollie) Valois was a Grand Champ prize trophy winner at the Willie Palooza BBQ contest two weeks ago.

This event is rain or shine. Admission is $8 for adults ($7 SIHS members),$5 for students 17 yrs. and under (student ID requires) and FREE for children under 48 inches.  For more information contact Historic Richmond Town at 718 351 1611 ext.236 or .
